Rio Tinto Aboriginal Health Partnership

Building on the success of a previous five year Aboriginal maternal and child health partnership, the Rio Tinto Aboriginal Health Partnership: Strong Foundations, Sustainable Futures responds to a call from Aboriginal community health workers for greater training, development and support opportunities in the area of maternal and child health.
Based on research and community consultation in the Pilbara, Kimberley and Kwinana from mid-2008, this two year project will provide practical tools and activities to help close the gap in Aboriginal health outcomes.

The Partnership is an undertaking between Rio Tinto and the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research through the Kulunga Research Network.

The Rio Tinto Aboriginal Health Partnership will involve:
  • Community consultation in Kwinana, the Kimberley, and the Pilbara to identify maternal and child health development needs and priorities for Aboriginal community health workers.
  • Activities, based on the community consultation, to build the skills, knowledge and capacity of Aboriginal community health workers. These will include:
- A maternal and child health toolkit;
- Regional workshops;
- Education scholarships; two Aboriginal Health Workers are currently being supported to further their studies in Aboriginal Primary Health Care.  Click here to read about them in the latest Strong Futures newsletter.
- Online learning; and
- National Aboriginal community health worker symposium.

  • Evaluation to track progress, assess activities and evaluate overall effectiveness of the project.
