Our History

The Kulunga Research Network (Kulunga) had its origins in the Bibbulung Gnarneep project which commenced in 1994. That project was one of the first Aboriginal research projects at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research (TICHR) and heralded the building of capacity in Aboriginal research.

Kulunga was officially formed in 1999 as a partnership between TICHR and the WA Aboriginal community through the WA Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (WAACCHO). WAACCHO no longer exists but a new body called AHCWA, short for the Aboriginal Health Council of WA, now stands in its place.

‘Kulunga’ is a Noongar word meaning child. The Kulunga Research Network was so named to recognise its focus on improvements in Aboriginal child health.
