Leukaemia and Other Cancers
Each year, around 50 Western Australian children are diagnosed with cancer.  Twenty years ago, a child with cancer had a zero to 20% chance of survival.  Today, almost eight out of ten children will survive the disease.  Researchers play a key role in finding new and more effective methods for the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancers.  Researchers have developed a technique in which they ‘grow’ cancer cells and then study them for abnormalities and to examine the molecular changes in them.

Researchers are now focussing on identifying children who are most at risk of relapse so their treatment can be tailored more effectively.

The drug development research has also resulted in the Institute’s first spinout company Phylogica which was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 2005.
