Hib Meningitis
The Institute was active in lobbying for free infant vaccines against Hib meningitis.  As a result, WA was the first state in Australia to introduce the vaccine and subsequently, the disease has been virtually eliminated.  The vaccine is now on the national immunisation schedule. Prior to the vaccine, approximately 630 cases of Hib meningitis and related diseases were reported in Australia each year, causing 19 deaths and leaving 46 children with permanent disabilities including brain damage.
