Cystic Fibrosis
Thanks to medical advances, the life expectancy of a child with cystic fibrosis has increased over the past 20 years from 8 years to just under 30 years and increasing. Researchers at the Institute are investigating how antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals can directly neutralise destructive enzymes produced in the lung and stop the progression of the disease. Other researchers are conducting an innovative research program with geneticists at the children’s and women’s hospital to evaluate the ethical and emotional impact of genetic counselling on affected families.

Researchers are also developing less invasive techniques to identify lung damage so it can be treated more effectively.
